WRITTEN WORK

Kole and Kalan Lind have always been each other's biggest fans, but this weekend they’re on opposite sides. The two brothers had to give up being allies for two games this weekend, as Kole is a forward for the Texas Stars and Kalan for the Milwaukee Admirals. Kole acknowledges how incredible the moment was for their family. “The possibility of it even being a thing was very exciting for me. It was one of the coolest things for our family,” Kole said.

Texas Stars forward Artem Shlaine has taken the road less traveled. He grew up in Moscow, Russia, with his mom, Kathy, his Dad, Dimitri, and his brother, Daniel. Artem visited the United States for the first time when he was six because of his dad's job, but they had no plans for a full-time life there.

In Russia, one can choose to play hockey or pursue a high-level education, but not at the same time. Artem's dad discovered the idea of playing in the United States, where his son got the chance to do both.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Texas Stars, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, shut out the Manitoba Moose 3-0 on Monday night at Canada Life Centre.

Manitoba pulled DiVincentiis with three minutes remaining and Artem Shlaine took advantage. He picked up a turnover and shot it from his own defensive zone into the empty net to give Texas a 3-0 lead, which the Stars held until the final horn.

Poirier earned his first shutout of the year with 25 saves for the Stars, and DiVincentiis had 22 saves in the loss for the Moose.

Growing up in Minnesota, playing hockey is not a choice; it’s a lifestyle. Tommy Bergsland, from Wayzata, Minnesota, had a head start on the rest of his neighborhood. The Bergsland family had a pond behind their house, which Tommy skated on since he was three years old, when it froze over from November to March.

“It gave me the opportunity to skate every day, which was probably one of my favorite things to do as a kid,” he said.

CEDAR PARK, Texas - The Texas Stars, American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, won 3-2 against the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday night at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park, headlined by two goals in 39 seconds in the second period.

The Stars came right back with their own scoring spree four minutes later. Milwaukee put the Stars on the man advantage and Kole Lind capitalized. Cross Hanas fired a shot from the left circle that got behind Murray and Lind swept it over the goal line to tie the game 2-2. Rookie goaltender Arno Tiefensee, in his home debut, had 27 saves in the win for the Stars, and Murray had 32 saves in the loss for the Admirals.

When Ames was a freshman at Desert Vista High School in Ahwatukee, she was immediately taken under junior Alex Depriest’s wing. Ames said that Depriest became sort of a big sister to her and helped her navigate her freshman season.

“She was very loud and outspoken, you could hear her from a mile away,” said Ames. “We instantly became close. She was always driving me to practice and home from practice, everything.”

It is unusual for a senior class to be as large as Sun Devil Gymnastics’ seven seniors and two fifth-year seniors. But for this year's team, the experience and leadership is vast and the student-athletes have created years of memories for themselves and their fans.

Arizona State Lacrosse players Kiera Biwer, Berit Brookfield, and sisters Maddie and McKenna Riley all knew each other before stepping foot on the ASU campus in Tempe.

All four are from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, 20 miles south of Denver. Even though they grew up in the same town, they didn’t attend the same high school. The Rileys and Biwer went to ThunderRidge, while Brookfield went to Mountain Vista. The schools are a three-mile drive on Colorado’s Wildcat Reserve Parkway apart from each other.
